Limiting a Search

Limiting a search is a valuable part of your search strategy. Instead of starting with very narrow search criteria--and possibly missing related items--you may want to start as broadly as possible, and then limit the initial broad search in carefully designed steps.
Note: You cannot limit Heading (subject, author, and call number) or Course Reserve searches.

There are three ways in which to limit your search:

1. Quick Limit:
Before beginning a Simple Search, choose an option from the Quick Limit menu. Your choices include a videorecording format or the various locations within the Karrmann Library.
NOTE:only applicable to Keyword Search, Exact Title, Journal/Magazine/Newspaper Title, and Boolean Search.

2.
This button will take you to the More Limit Options table. (See below) From here you may limit your search further by Language; Location, Year of Publication; Format and Item Type. Limits will be in effect until cleared. Notice bright blue message that will appear above the search screen: "Search Limits are in effect!"

3.
Once you have executed a search, it is possible to make further refinements by adding limits to the results of this search. Simply click on the Refine Search button, located at the top of the Titles List, this will take you to the More Limit Options table. (See below)

Click the Set Limits button to begin your search. Click the Reset button to clear the search page.
